Spirit Mountain Adventure Park – Duluth

The complete Timber Twister experience will take riders on a thrilling six-minute journey while overlooking the wondrous views of Lake Superior. There are only four alpine coasters operating in the U.S. and this will be the only one in the Midwest. This is truly a unique attraction, and is NOT an alpine slide!!!  The “Timber Flyer” Zip Line is open year-round!  The “Timber Flyer” is an exhilarating thrill ride unlike a traditional zip line.  On the “Timber Flyer” you can ride Single or Double on a bench-type seat secured with safety belts.  The ride takes you zipping through the treetops, 700 feet down the mountain, overlooking Lake Superior and the City of Duluth.

Towering Pines Canopy Tour – Gunflint Trail

An exciting 2+ hour naturalist adventure trip through the canopies of huge old growth white pine trees on a series of 8 zip lines, led by two sky guides. The views are awesome as you overlook Lonely Lake, Gunflint Lake and the Canadian shores to the north, and the entire Boreal forest basin behind Gunflint Lodge.

Aquarium

Great Lakes Aquarium – Duluth

To “inspire people to explore their connection to Lake Superior and waters of the world.”   The Great Lakes Aquarium has been located on the Duluth Waterfront since 2000. A freshwater aquarium, GLA features animals and habitats found within the Great Lakes Basin. The Aquarium also houses animals from other freshwater ecosystems such as the Amazon River. A changeable exhibit space is designed to interpret marine (saltwater) animals and habitat.

Gitchi Gami Trail – North Shore

When completed, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail (GGST) will be an 89-mile non-motorized, paved recreational trail between Two Harbors and Grand Marais, Minnesota, along Lake Superior’s beautiful and historic North Shore. Several segments of the trail, totaling over 30 miles, are complete.

Tofte Charters – Tofte

Join us for a relaxing scenic cruise or fishing trip aboard Tofte Charters on Lake Superior.  Watch the Sawtooth Mountain range and the Superior National Forest slide slowly by as we troll along the rugged North Shore. King Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead and Lake Trout inhabit the local waters and all make for fine dining after the trip.

Pokegama Golf Course of Grand Rapids is a Northland favorite. You’ll enjoy our 18 hole layout on the shores of beautiful Pokegama Lake.  Men’s, Women’s, Senior’s and Junior golf associations as well as the Minnesota PGA have chosen Pokegama as a host site for many local, regional, and state golf events.

Ely Golf Club – Ely

Ely has a 9-hole, 3,245 yard, par 36 course that is open to the public.   It took eleven years of work and worry to create what now proudly presents itself as the Gem of Ely.  

Superior National Golf Course – Lutsen

Nestled on Minnesota’s North Shore between Lake Superior and the ancient Sawtooth Mountains, Superior National at Lutsen is an easy 3.5-hour drive from the Twin Cities metro area. Once you get here, absorb the endless coastal view and inhale the northern air, you’ll feel like you’re a world away.

Lakeview National Golf Course – Two Harbors

The Lakeview National Golf Course is a challenging 18 hole championship course and is one of the most beautiful recreational sites on the North Shore. Designed by Garret Gill, the course was renovated in 1996-1997 with all new tees and the expansion to 18 holes. You will soon discover why it was named “Lakeview”.

Northeast Minnesota Hiking Trails

Besides all the great hiking opportunities in our state parks, there are hundreds of miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) in our state. The NCT stretches 4,600 miles from North Dakota to Vermont. In Minnesota it shares part of its path with the Kekekabic, Border Route and Superior Hiking Trails. Superior Hiking Trail – North Shore

The Superior Hiking Trail is a 296-mile footpath that largely follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior on Minnesota’s North Shore from Duluth to the Canadian border. There are trailhead parking lots every 5-10 miles making it ideal for both day hikes and backpack camping. There are 92 backcountry campsites with no fees, reservations or permits required to hike or camp on the trail. Dogs are allowed on leash only. The Superior Hiking Trail Association builds, maintains, and manages the trail with the help of hundreds of volunteers.

International Wolf Center – Ely

The Center accomplishes educational outreach beyond its Ely facility through a comprehensive Web site at www.wolf.org, a quarterly magazine, web cams on the resident pack, international symposia and a distance learning program that virtually brings our educators and wolves into classrooms in real time. People around the world are touched each year with educational messages about the wolf.

North American Bear Center – Ely

The North American Bear Center is the only Science/Nature museum of its kind. Dedicated to replacing old myths with facts, it lets people learn from the bears themselves about bear behavior, ecology, and their relations with humans. The most common expression we hear from first-time visitors as they step inside the door of the Bear Center is “WOW!”

Minnesota Discovery Center – Chisholm

Minnesota Discovery Center is the largest museum complex in the state outside the Twin Cities.  It’s the one place to learn everything about the Land, the Mines, the People and the Work of the Iron Range.

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center – Gunflint Trail Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center is open daily from Memorial Day Weekend through the third weekend of October. Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center tells the story of the Gunflint Trail. Interpretive and interactive displays in this Gunflint Trail museum present the area’s cultural and natural history from its prehistoric beginnings to the development of today’s unique, rural community. A network of nature trails crisscrosses Chik-Wauk’s 50-acre grounds. Plan to immerse yourself in the Gunflint Trail forest with Chik-Wauk’s family-focused, self guided naturalist program, which includes activity packs for use on the Chik-Wauk grounds.

Chippewa National Forest Visitor Center Traveling to the Chippewa National Forest means traveling “up north”. The Forest, located in the heart of northern Minnesota, is a celebration of seasons, culture, and environment. This northern hardwood forest mixes between the western prairies and the northern boreal forest to the north and east. It is a Forest with shared boundaries-red oak to white pine, wild ginger to wild rice and Canada lynx to sandhill crane. The border is also shared between governments as well, with the Chippewa National Forest working across shared borders with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

Grand Rapids Showboat does a variety show with vaudville type performances. The Grand Rapids Showboat performances have been every summer, the last three weekends in July, for the past fifty plus years. The performances are colorful, with a variety of song, dance and skits. The show is all performed by local talent of volunteers. Our goal is to bring entertainment to our audiences, when they smile, we have accomplished what we intended. GlenSheen Mansion – Duluth

Come see why Glensheen Mansion, perched on the shore of Lake Superior, is the most visited historic home in Minnesota. Our 7-acre estate features gardens, bridges, and the famous 39-room mansion built with remarkable 20th century craftsmanship, telling the story of the Duluth region. Chester and Clara Congdon built Glensheen between 1905 and 1908 as their home. This influential family is known for opening up iron mining in this region and setting aside land for public use, such as the North Shore Scenic Highway and Congdon Park.  

Soudan Underground Mine Tour – Soudan

The tour will take you 1/2 mile down into the earth on a cage similar to the one the miners used in earlier days. Once underground, you will take a 3/4 mile train ride to the last and deepest area mined.Plan 1.5 hours for the tour. Bring a warm coat or sweater. Closed-toed shoes are recommended. Close space for the three-minute ride down into the mine and two narrow spiral staircases.

White Water Rafting
